Prenatal Massage
Pregnancy places extraordinary demands on the body — shifting posture, compressing nerves, straining muscles, and disrupting sleep. Prenatal massage is specifically designed to address these changes safely and effectively at every stage of pregnancy.
At Blue Monarch, prenatal massage with Terri Rodriguez LMT combines therapeutic techniques with specialized positioning and a deep understanding of how the pregnant body responds to bodywork. Whether you're in your first trimester or weeks from delivery, each session is tailored to where you are right now.
Physician clearance required: All clients must provide a signed doctor's or midwife's note approving prenatal massage before their first session. Please bring your note to your appointment or send it to us in advance.

Prenatal Massage, explained
Prenatal massage is more than a relaxation treatment — it is a clinically informed therapeutic service that addresses the specific physical changes pregnancy produces in the musculoskeletal, nervous, and circulatory systems. When performed by a trained therapist, it is safe, effective, and deeply beneficial throughout all three trimesters.
Terri brings both therapeutic massage expertise and a thorough understanding of prenatal physiology to each session — adapting pressure, positioning, and technique to the unique needs of your body and stage of pregnancy. No two prenatal sessions are exactly alike.

MODALITIES & METHODS
Techniques Used
Each session draws from a set of evidence-informed techniques, adapted specifically for the pregnant body and your individual needs at each stage of pregnancy.
Specialized Positioning
60-minute sessions are performed in a comfortable side-lying position, fully supported by bolsters and cushioning. 90-minute sessions include use of Blue Monarch's tilt table — allowing clients to recline on their back at a supported angle, opening up broader therapeutic access and a more comfortable experience throughout the session.
Nervous System Regulation
Pregnancy can place the nervous system under sustained sympathetic stress. Terri uses specific techniques to activate the parasympathetic response — supporting not only your comfort but your body's ability to rest, recover, and prepare for birth.
Swedish & Myofascial Techniques
Gentle effleurage and myofascial release are adapted for the pregnant body — relieving the muscle tension, postural strain, and fascial restrictions that develop as your center of gravity shifts and your body accommodates a growing baby.
Targeted Discomfort Relief
Common pregnancy complaints — including lower back and hip pain, sciatic nerve irritation, upper back and neck tension, swollen legs and feet, and round ligament discomfort — are addressed with targeted, pregnancy-safe techniques during each session.
Adapted for Every Trimester
Each trimester brings different physical demands and different areas of focus. In the first trimester, work tends to be gentler and more regulatory. The second trimester often allows for deeper therapeutic work as discomfort increases. The third trimester focuses heavily on preparation — relieving the compressive load of late pregnancy and supporting the body as it approaches birth.

YOUR VISIT
What to Expect
01
Intake & Assessment
Your session begins with a brief intake covering your current stage of pregnancy, any areas of discomfort or concern, your health history, and your goals for the session. Terri will also review any contraindications and confirm that prenatal massage is appropriate for you at this stage of your pregnancy.
02
Positioning & Comfort Setup
You'll be comfortably positioned on your side using specialized bolsters and cushioning designed for prenatal massage. Terri takes care to ensure you're fully supported and at ease before any work begins — your comfort throughout the session is the priority.
03
Therapeutic Prenatal Work
Terri applies pregnancy-adapted techniques to the areas identified during intake — addressing tension, pain, and discomfort with appropriate pressure and method for your stage of pregnancy. Work may include back, hips, legs, neck, shoulders, and feet depending on your session length and needs.
04
Close & Recovery
Before you leave, Terri will bring you a bottle of water. Staying well hydrated after bodywork supports your body's recovery and is especially important during pregnancy. Terri will also share any observations from the session and may offer recommendations for your next visit based on your stage of pregnancy and how your body responded.

GOOD TO KNOW
Frequently Asked Questions
Is prenatal massage safe during the first trimester?
Yes — prenatal massage is safe throughout all three trimesters when performed by a trained therapist. Some clients prefer to wait until the second trimester, and that is completely fine. If you have any concerns or a high-risk pregnancy, we recommend consulting your OB or midwife first.
What position will I be in during the massage?
For 60-minute sessions, prenatal massage is performed in a comfortable side-lying position, fully supported by specialized bolsters and cushioning. For 90-minute sessions, Blue Monarch's tilt table allows clients to recline on their back at a supported angle with bolsters — a more comfortable and versatile position that allows for broader therapeutic work. You will never be asked to lie flat on your stomach.
Are there any contraindications I should know about?
Prenatal massage is contraindicated for clients with certain high-risk pregnancy conditions, including placenta previa, preeclampsia, deep vein thrombosis, or preterm labor. If you have been advised by your physician to limit physical activity or have any pregnancy complications, please consult your provider before booking.
How often should I come in during pregnancy?
This varies by trimester and individual need. Many clients find monthly sessions helpful in the first and second trimester, increasing to bi-weekly or weekly sessions in the third trimester as discomfort increases and the body prepares for birth. Terri will discuss a recommended schedule during your first session.
Can I get a massage right up until my due date?
Yes — prenatal massage is safe and often most beneficial in the final weeks of pregnancy. Many clients find that sessions in the third trimester provide significant relief from the physical demands of late pregnancy and help prepare the body and nervous system for labor.
